Professional reformer: 8 criteria for choosing a machine built for intensive use
The 8 criteria for choosing a reformer for a studio, gym or venue, plus our three studio reformers compared on price, dimensions and weight.

When choosing a professional reformer, look first at its frame, its adjustments and how easy it is to keep in service, and only then at the price. In a studio, gym or wellness venue, it has to keep going session after session, be readjusted between clients and stay available all season long. Here are the 8 criteria to check, followed by a comparison of our three studio reformers.
What sets professional use apart from home use?
The difference comes down to three things: frequency, turnover and adjustments. At home, one or two people use the machine a few times a week. In a studio, several classes follow one another every day, with clients of different builds and levels.
- Frequency: the machine works several hours a day. Wear parts (ropes, straps, springs) wear out faster.
- Turnover: each client adjusts the footbar, springs and straps. Settings need to be quick to change and easy to read.
- Availability: a machine out of action means one fewer place in the class, so you need to be able to get it back up and running quickly.
Setting up the equipment is part of the job too. The French certification “Teaching the Pilates method” (RS7335, France Compétences) includes among its required skills adjusting the springs and straps of the apparatus for each client and preparing the room and equipment.
The 8 criteria for choosing a professional reformer
1. Fixed or foldable frame
For a station that stays in place all day, choose a fixed frame. It stays assembled, adjusted and ready between classes. A foldable reformer makes sense when the room has to be cleared for other activities, but you will then need to build unfolding and moving time into your schedule.
2. Material and weight
Weight is a good indication of how stable a machine is on the floor. Our studio reformers weigh from 78 kg (Wooden Studio Reformer, solid wood frame) to 135 kg (3-in-1 Studio Reformer, oak frame). For comparison, our Aluminium Foldable Reformer weighs 68 kg. A heavy machine also means planning delivery and installation: access, stairs and how many people are needed to carry it.
3. Number of springs and precision of adjustment
The more springs there are, the more resistance combinations are possible. Our three studio reformers have 6 adjustable springs. The 3-in-1 Studio Reformer adds 10 trapeze springs for the Cadillac section. For group classes, also make sure the hooks are easy to reach and that the instructor can see the settings at a glance.
4. Carriage on bearings
The carriage is the part that moves with every repetition. A carriage on bearings gives a smooth, even movement. Our Wooden Studio Reformer is fitted with a carriage on bearings. For the other models, ask for construction details with your quote rather than making assumptions.
5. Versatility: built-in tower or Cadillac
A tower or Cadillac greatly increases the number of exercises you can do on a single station, which is useful for private sessions and small spaces. For group classes, simple, identical reformers make teaching easier: everyone does the same exercise on the same machine.
6. Dimensions and layout
Work from the actual dimensions. A studio reformer is about 2.3 to 2.4 m long. With a tower or Cadillac, the height exceeds 1.9 m, so check your ceiling height. Then allow enough clearance to move between machines, agreed with your instructor and in line with your safety plan.
7. Availability of wear parts
Ropes, straps, handles and springs all wear out eventually. Before buying, ask which parts are available and how to check their compatibility. Our range includes 8 mm ropes, hand and foot straps, handles and a replacement spring. Their compatibility is listed as “to be checked against your model”, and the spring sold individually is designed for a 5-spring configuration. If you are equipping a studio with 6-spring reformers, ask us to confirm the right parts when you request your quote.
8. Delivery and opening date
Delivery time has a direct impact on your opening date. At Pilates Douceur, standard delivery is free to 30 European countries and takes 7 to 14 days. These are estimates, so build some leeway into your schedule.
Pilates Douceur studio reformers compared
Our three studio reformers take three different approaches: a station for group classes, a versatile station with a tower, and an all-in-one reformer + tower + Cadillac station.

Our product pages do not mention any certification for intensive use. For a studio or gym, tell us in your request how many sessions a day you are planning: suitability for your intended use is confirmed with your quote, machine by machine.
Standardising your studio’s machines
A matching set of machines simplifies teaching and maintenance: the same settings, the same parts, the same reference points for every client. The Wooden Studio Reformer comes in black, white and grey, so you can match it to your interior. Personalisation with your studio name or custom text can be discussed as part of your quote.

Maintaining several reformers
Planned maintenance keeps downtime to a minimum. Schedule regular checks of the ropes, straps and springs, and replace any part that does not look right. Clean the rails and upholstery according to each machine’s manual. Our installation and care page lists the points to check, and our guide reformer springs: maintenance and replacement covers the wear parts in detail.
Writing for the manufacturer Merrithew, one of its instructors estimates that a good-quality reformer can last for more than 20 years. That is a manufacturer’s claim and does not apply to our machines. The same article advises studios to check the warranty and access to a repair service before buying, so ask every supplier about both.
Frequently asked questions
Can a foldable reformer work for a studio?
Yes, if the room has to be cleared for other activities. A model such as the Aluminium Foldable Reformer (68 kg, 136 × 74 × 50 cm folded) can be stored away after the session. For stations that stay in place all day, a fixed frame is easier to live with. Either way, let us know how it will be used in your quote request.
How many springs does a professional reformer need?
There is no set number. More springs give more resistance combinations. Our studio reformers have 6 adjustable springs; the 3-in-1 adds 10 trapeze springs for the Cadillac section.
Can the machines be personalised with the studio name?
Yes, personalisation with a name or text can be discussed as part of your quote. Include the text you want and the number of machines concerned in your request.
Are spare parts available?
Our range includes 8 mm ropes, hand straps, foot straps, handles and a replacement spring for 5-spring configurations. Compatibility depends on the model: if you are equipping a studio, ask us to confirm it when you request your quote.
How do I get a price for several reformers?
Fill in the quote request form with your profile (studio, sports or wellness professional, company or venue), your company registration or VAT number and the list of machines. Volume pricing applies from 2 pieces of equipment.
